Celebration of Light by KobraPhotography Celebration of Light by KobraPhotography
I finally picked up a new (used) lens today, and what better way to test it out then to shoot Great Britain's fireworks display at night three of Vancouver's annual Celebration of Light! This was the 10 minute pre-show warning.

Edit: Thank you very much to ^estudio for featuring this as a Daily Deviation, and especially to =PatrickRuegheimer for suggesting it! :thanks:

I was visiting Vancouver with my girlfriend that weekend, and we watched the Celebration of Light that night. In addition to being a fantastic shot in its own right, thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory!

Thank you very much for the compliments. It's stories like this that make it rewarding to be able to share my photos here. It's kind of ironic though, that I just cleared out a chunk of my gallery, including other shots from this same night

Thanks for the :+fav: too!

Is it the fast lens that helped you achieve this incredible result?

I don't think the speed of the lens did much. I had it stopped down to f9, so I'm sure any lens with this focal length would've fared the same. However, the sharpness of this lens probably did play it's part. Then of course, Mother Nature was also on my side. :D Thanks for commenting

What can I say... Everything played out perfectly! For at least a half hour prior to this shot, I was tweaking the composition ever so slightly to make sure it was perfect when the show started. I was taking test shots every few minutes too so I could judge the best exposure. From past shows, I knew they send up a few teasers before 10:00, so I was also intently paying attention to that. This was literally the tail end of the Golden Hour too, as it was completely dark only a few minutes later. All said and done, this is the result! Earning a Daily Deviation, I think I did fairly well :D

Thanks! You going to be shooting the festival this year? Last year, I tried a few different vantage points and I think the Burrard Bridge worked out the best. I mean just look - that's where this was taken from :D

How could you lose that? Which tripod head do you have? Considering it's a common one like Manfrotto, finding a replacement shouldn't be too hard. Might even be able to find one cheap on Ebay.

I'll be on the Burrard Bridge for all 4 nights of the fireworks this year if you want to come say hi :)

i don't know. that's what happens when you hire a cleaning lady lol jk. no i don't know how i lost the stupid thing. for all i know it could be hiding in my bag or my room somewhere. how much are those things? the ballhead is a manfrotto 486rc2. it's seen better days anyway. i think i might just get another one from london drugs or something. we should meetup one of these fireworks nights. i'm photographing an event
this saturday, so i'm not sure i'll make it. how was the first night though?

Ah yeah, good choice. I have the same head. You could probably find a replacement plate for about $30. I actually tried finding mine at London Drugs, and they had to make a special order so I said forget it. I priced around town and found that Kerrisdale and Gastown Photo had the best price for the whole thing - $90.

The first night was alright, but I honestly don't think the US will win. Mexico is going to be hard to beat - just wait and see :D Note me if you want to meet up :)

Great photo colours are magnificent. Being from Great Britain - specifically England how did the GB entry fare in what I guess is some fireworks competition?

Thank you very much. :handshake:

You're absolutely right, the Celebration of Light is a fireworks competition held annually in Vancouver, Canada. In my honest opinion, Great Britain's fireworks display were the best in 2009, however it was China who ended up winning the event.
